» Tablet Poker

Tablets are made for online poker. Just as with other games, the touch screen interface adds to the thrill of playing. But, with the obvious exception of Apple’s iPad 2 and 3, tablet PCs running other operating systems (OS) appear to have struggled to get their ducks in a row.

So you’ll have no problem finding a few real money iPad poker apps to play and you know the gaming experience will be first class. But whether or not your Android OS tablet is able to play Android poker apps for cash is going to depend on which one you’ve bought. Here are the best Android tablet poker apps for models from the following manufacturers – Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG and Motorola:

  • You are not going to be downloading these apps from the Android Marketplace, which means you need to tell your Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC Flyer or whatever to accept apps from non-market place sources. See these instructions for more details.
  • Since it received an update to Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) in early 2012, HTC Flyer poker apps really started to work better. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is also now running this new tablet optimised Android OS.

Poker for Android Tablets

This is not as simple as it should be for us poker players: combined with the mobile poker app situation we’ve got a lot of tricks to learn. While in the mobile / cell phone arena, a new Android handset can be relied up on to play a real money Android poker app no problem, when it comes to tablets there’s an Amazon shaped stone in our poker shoe.

Poker for Kindle Fire

Amazon’s Kindle Fire has proved hugely popular with consumers in 2012 but it runs a stripped down version of the Android OS that means only apps from the marketplace or Google Play can be downloaded and run. On the plus side, this may well mean your precious Amazon tablet is better protected from viruses and malicious software than other Android tablets, which is clearly a good thing.

However, since Google will not allow gambling applications in the marketplace it unfortunately does also mean that, currently, you won’t be able to download and play any real money Android poker apps. Kindle Fire poker is restricted to those apps using fun money.

You could try one of the new real money poker web apps from Terminal Poker, mFortune and Switch Poker. The question is, how good will these look on the Kindle Fire’s 7-inch, 1024×600 screen and using its new Silk Browser?

Free Tablet Poker Apps

Of course, if you’re not interested in playing poker for real money on your tablet and just want to download fun games then (a) there is a lot more choice and (b) it doesn’t matter so much which tablet you own. Not all of these apps are free to download and even with the free download poker apps there may be extra costs if you need more chips to satisfy your poker craving.

But they’re free in the sense that the money you’re playing with isn’t coming out of your own pocket, at least not directly.

Here are the best free poker apps for Android currently available in the marketplace. All have 4 or 5 stars from a decent sample of reviewers.

  1. Live Holdem Poker Pro – popular free Android poker app with 5,000 free chips per day and an even bigger stash to start with
  2. Zynga Poker – Android and iPhone / iPad Texas Holdem tables sizes of 5 to 9 players from the big social gaming software company
  3. Poker King Pro-Texas Holdem – free poker tournaments on your tablet and ring games too
  4. Appeak Poker – 1,000 free chips every day
  5. Texas HoldEm Poker Deluxe – 30,000 chips when you join!

All these apps feature no limit Texas Holdem ring games with options to vary the amount you buy in etc.

Blackberry Playbook Poker

It seems to be a recurring theme in the world of mobile and tablet apps – the one platform that suffers more than any other (perhaps with the exception of Nokia’s Symbian OS) is Blackberry. There are so far no dedicated real money poker apps to download for the Blackberry tablet yet. mFortune claims its browser based games are compatible but we have not been able to confirm this.
