» iPad Poker Apps

Poker apps for iPad may be browser based (like the one from Switch Poker) or a full blown native iOS application that you can download via iTunes from the App Store. Some only offer Texas Holdem ring games for iPad while others, like the apps from Pokerstars and TerminalPoker.com have sit & go tournament tables, pot limit Omaha games and more.

  • Some apps require the latest version of Apple’s iOS platform to be installed. This is a good place to find out how.
  • The apps recommended above are all for real money poker play, although they have fun modes too. For more iPad free poker apps, see below or try searching iTunes (if you have the patience!).

iPad 2 Quirks

Apple has only recently started allowing real money betting games inside its App Store, which explains why some new operators have gone down the browser-based route. The trouble with browser based iPad 2 apps is that Apple doesn’t seem to really be all that enthusiastic about consumers using iPads in this way – it makes it hard for developers to make web applications with the same usability as native apps.

There are a few ways it does this:

  1. Adobe Flash player will not work on the iOS (so you need to look for games with no Adobe Flash player required)
  2. Java cannot be installed easily on iPads (so it browser-based games needing Java ME are best avoided)
  3. Apple apparently also finds other creative ways to prevent things like a game’s sound effects from working properly!

The best developers can work around all of these and when playing the best iPad 2 poker web apps you probably won’t even notice. However, at least one poker app developer has admitted that it’s having difficulties ensuring its app’s sound effects work properly on iPads and iPhones.

And they’ll probably have to look for a new set of work-arounds when the iPad 3 comes out…

iPad Texas Holdem

Most of the new apps will let you play real money Texas Hold’em on your iPad – this is the most commonly found real money poker game currently available for portable devices, reflecting its popularity in general.

Although some do offer Omaha tables, the difference between the games offered by the various iPad-friendly apps is more about whether they offer cash games or tournament games or both.

If you want to play real money Texas Holdem sit&gos on your iPad your only options at the moment are the TerminalPoker and Pokerstars apps. We regularly update our main app comparison on the poker-apps.org homepage.

Free Poker for iPad

Playing poker for fun instead of for real (although this can also be fun, sometimes :|) is one way to learn the game and a great way to kill time, if you’ve got a little to kill. Some players will tell you that you can’t learn the game unless you’re risking your own money and some people will probably tell you that there are more productive ways to spend your free time but we would remind them to mind their own business.

Here is a selection of the best iPad free poker apps, some of which you will probably have heard of, and other that may be new:

  • Poker by Zynga – 4.5 stars in iTunes and by far most popular free Texas Holdem poker app for iPhone or iPad
  • VIP Poker HD – high definition app makes the most of iPad screen size
  • Mega Poker Online – another fairly average Texas Holdem free poker app

Remember that these apps are only free as long as you manage to stay within your daily chip allowances! And it’s good to be a little suspicious of rating, especially when the number of ratings is low since they are more prone to bias. In fact in general ratings can be dodgy, since some apps will give you extra chips for liking a Facebook page etc.

With the iPad 2, poker on the move has become something even professional players can consider. Look for the apps that allow multi-tabling to really use the device’s power and extra screen size / resolution. If first class game play is your priority then choose the native apps to download (see our top apps above) instead of one of the browser based alternatives from mFortune, SwitchPoker and TerminalPoker.

iPad poker has finally become a reality. Angry birds served a purpose for a while but now it’s time for the real games to begin.
