Notes:

  • Not sure what screen resolution your phone has? All Motorola Defy, Droid and Bravo phones, Google’s Nexus as well as HTC Desire poker apps will work fine with their 800×400 or 480×854 screens. Poker apps for LG Optimus and Acer F-S series devices should also look great.
  • Owners of models like the Samsung Galaxy Ace or HTC Wildfire and early HTC Touch models may prefer to start with the apps from Terminal Poker or Switch Poker, which look better on screens with lower resolutions.
  • Download Android poker apps cannot be found by searching Google Play (“the Android marketplace”). As a result, to play them you will need to “allow install of non-market applications” through the Android Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources menu. Consider using an anti-virus program to protect your phone, such as Avast’s free mobile security software.

Android Texas Holdem Real Money

If your preferred table to sit down to is a no-limits Texas Holdem ring game then, perhaps unsurprisingly, you have most options available to you – the mFortune, Bet24, Switch, Terminal and bwin Android poker apps are all based around the classic game.

Indeed, all the apps in the table above offer real money Texas Holdem Android games.

Your choice of which to download should depend on other factors like how loose / competitive the network is thought to be or the app’s performance on your particular phone model.

However, if Texas Holdem tournaments are more your thing then at the moment your best option is the PokerStars Android app, although this could all change in less time than it takes for the blinds to go round the table in a heads up game!

Omaha Poker on Android

Again, at the time of writing, PokerStars is the only real money Omaha poker app for Android phones. Switch Poker promises that it will be adding pot-limit Omaha games in the near future (although its first priority is to make sit and go tournaments available).

What players are saying…

Given that many mobile poker networks are in their infancy and player pools are small, the decision by Terminal Poker to adopt a Rush Poker for Android format seems like a good one – you get the rewards of regular tournament action with the excitement of cash games.

Rush Poker Android

This is an interesting variation on the normal way to play ring games. Instead of sitting at a table with the same people hand after hand, every time your involvement in a hand ends you are automatically sat at another table with a different set of players.

This style of poker (referred to variously as Rush Poker, Fast Poker or Zoom Poker) was popularised by Full Tilt (see below) but is already available as a Fast Poker Android app from TerminalPoker.com.

Free Android Poker Apps

It is much easier to get hold of and compare free multi-player Android poker apps, provided you can spare a few minutes trawling through the Google Play search results to separate the multiplayer games from the other varieties offered like Video poker apps, timers, odds calculators and all the rest.

Out top tip is to do a search for ‘Texas Holdem Poker’ Android downloads and sort by relevance and then check the popularity. Here is our list of the best multiplayer free Texas Holdem Android poker apps, based on research in April 2012:

  1. Live Holdem Poker Pro – 4 ½ stars – 500,000 downloads
  2. Zynga Poker – 4 ½ stars – 150,000 downloads
  3. Poker KinG Pro-Texas Holdem – 5 stars – 25,000 downloads
  4. VIP Poker  – 4 ½ stars – 8,000 downloads
  5. Appeak Poker – 4 ½ stars – 6,000 downloads
  6. Texas HoldEm Poker Deluxe – 4 ½ stars – 5,000 downloads

Android Poker

Many sites are sure to have apps in development or soon to be officially released (often known as ‘beta’ versions). Apparently, there was even a Full Tilt Android poker app (beta), which sounds like it would have been a lot like the Adobe Flash player powered apps at Unibet and Ladbrokes, if the company hadn’t found itself in so much trouble.

And who knows, maybe there’s light at the end of the Full Tilt Poker tunnel yet. There have been reports that a takeover deal is near.

However, Android poker in the UK and Europe is flourishing and in the near future, we are sure to see it really take off. Expect UK Android poker apps soon from some of the big high street names such as William Hill and Paddy Power, both part of the iPoker network operated by Playtech.

And there is already a beta version of an 888 Android poker app available to download for testing, if you fancy being one of their guinea pigs!
